The King County GIS Center received the 2024 URISA Exemplary Systems in Government award for its new interactive Aerial Imagery Program web application, improving the management and ordering of high-resolution aerial imagery. This streamlined process has saved over one hundred hours of staff time, enhancing efficiency for local jurisdictions.

Extraction of Tree Crowns Using 2021 LiDAR for King County

Climate change is a growing concern due to extreme weather events and infrastructure damage. Trees play a crucial role in mitigating this by absorbing CO2 and producing oxygen. High-resolution LiDAR data is used to create tree canopy models to track changes in tree cover, vital for environmental and economic well-being. An estimate of over 101 million trees in King County underscores the importance of accurate inventory and conservation efforts.

A virtual view of what’s new in Seattle

Seattle, the county seat for King County and the largest city in the state of Washington, has seen great growth in the past 15 years in the construction of new buildings and infrastructure. During this same 15-year span, here in the King County GIS Center we have added two sets of vintage “lidar” data for the county to our GIS data library.
